Java practice that shows how students think

Educator CS Lab is a structured AP CSA environment. Students move from specification to algorithm, code, execution trace, tests and explanation — and teachers see the reasoning, not just the final answer.

How CS Lab works

One learning sequence for every activity

  1. Step 1

    Specify and plan

Students restate the specification, then write an algorithm before touching code — so misunderstandings surface early.

  2. Step 2

    Code and trace

A three-panel Java workspace keeps requirements, editor and hints side by side, with execution traces to predict behavior.

  3. Step 3

    Test and explain

Tests, a written explanation and a short reflection complete each activity, giving teachers evidence of understanding.

Specification → Algorithm → Code → Execution Trace → Tests → Explanation → Reflection

Course map

Organized around the four 2025–26 AP CSA units

Unit and topic numbers are checked against the College Board Course at a Glance. Exam weightings below are the published ranges.

  • Unit 1
    Using Objects and Methods
Algorithms, variables and expressions, then calling class and instance methods — including the Math and String classes.
    15 topicsExam 15–25%
  • Unit 2
    Selection and Iteration
Boolean logic, if statements and loops, then the standard selection, iteration and String algorithms built from them.
    12 topicsExam 25–35%
  • Unit 3
    Class Creation
Designing classes with abstraction in mind: constructors, methods, references, static members, scope and this.
    9 topicsExam 10–18%
  • Unit 4
    Data Collections
Arrays, ArrayLists, 2D arrays and text files, with searching, sorting, recursion and the ethics of data collection.
    17 topicsExam 30–40%
